Molecular Cell Biology

Research Summary: Proteins are fundamental to cell structure and function. They provide the necessary framework that gives cells their shape and are involved in nearly every task within a cell, from metabolism to DNA replication.Nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, store and convey the genetic instructions for the production of proteins. These molecules ensure that proteins are synthesized in the appropriate quantity, at the correct time, and within the right cellular location.Phospholipids form the basic structure of cell membranes. These lipid molecules arrange themselves in a bilayer, creating a barrier that regulates what enters and exits the cell, maintaining...

A new topical panthenol-containing emollient: Results from two randomized controlled studies assessing its skin moisturization and barrier restoration potential, and the effect on skin microflora

A new topical panthenol-containing emollient: Results from two randomized controlled studies assessing its skin moisturization and barrier restoration potential, and the effect on skin microflora

Research Summary: Purpose: Two randomized, intra-individual comparison studies were performed in healthy subjects to evaluate the skin moisturization and barrier restoration potential of a new topical panthenol-containing emollient (NTP-CE) (Study 1) and its effect on skin microflora (Study 2).Methods: In Study 1 (N = 23), two skin areas, one challenged with 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution and one unchallenged, were treated with NTP-CE for 3 weeks. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, and intercellular lipid lamellae (ICLL) organization were measured at regular intervals during the study. In Study 2 (N = 20), quantitative bacterial cultures were obtained over 6...

Acne in ethnic skin

Acne in ethnic skin

Research Summary: Although acne occurs in all races and ethnicities, there are differences in presentation between each group. A recent survey found that papules were the most frequent presentation of acne in African Americans (70.7%) and Hispanics (74.5%), with Asians and other races having similar presentations. The same survey also found that postinflammatory hyperpigmentation was a frequent complaint; in fact, it is often the chief complaint for acne in patients of darker races with acne.Wilkins and Voorhees found that the nodulocystic variant of acne occurs less frequently in African Americans than in whites. That study also found that nodulocystic acne...

The New Sunscreens among Formulation Strategy, Stability Issues, Changing Norms, Safety and Efficacy Evaluations

The New Sunscreens among Formulation Strategy, Stability Issues, Changing Norms, Safety and Efficacy Evaluations

Research Summary: The sun-and-skin interactions have controversial sides. Besides important beneficial effects, we also need to take into consideration some serious harmful results. In particular, these are connected to the portion of the solar spectrum traditionally identified as ultraviolet type A and B. The topical application of sunscreens (and the avoidance of extreme exposure to sun rays) is worldwide recognized as the best strategy to avoid sunburn and edema. Moreover, such a strategy can efficiently prevent the onset of skin cancer. Therefore, the first aim of sunscreen products is to efficiently minimize all damage from sun exposure, while, at the same...
