Trehalose for Ocular Surface Health

Trehalose for Ocular Surface Health

Research Summary Trehalose is a natural disaccharide synthesized in various life forms but is not found in vertebrates. An increasing body of evidence demonstrates the exceptional bioprotective characteristics of trehalose. This review discusses scientific findings on the potential functions of trehalose in oxidative stress, protein clearance, and inflammation, with an emphasis on animal models and clinical trials in ophthalmology. The main objective is to help understand the beneficial effects of trehalose in clinical trials and practice, particularly in patients suffering from ocular surface disease. The discussion is supplemented with an overview of patents for the use of trehalose in dry eye...

Treating atopic dermatitis: safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability of a ceramide hyaluronic acid emollient foam

Treating atopic dermatitis: safety, efficacy, and patient acceptability of a ceramide hyaluronic acid emollient foam

Research Summary Advances in the current understanding of the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis have led to improved targeting of the structural deficiencies in atopic skin. Ceramide deficiency appears to be one of the major alterations in atopic dermatitis, and the replenishment of this epidermal component through topically applied ceramide-based emollients has been shown to be safe, well-tolerated, and effective.Recently, a ceramide hyaluronic acid foam has become commercially available, and increasing evidence supports its safety and efficacy in patients suffering from atopic dermatitis. Keywords: atopic dermatitis, ceramide, Hylatopic, eczema, non-steroidal, dermatology <Access the full report below>

Topical Drug Delivery Therapeutics, Drug Absorption and Penetration Enhancement Techniques

Topical Drug Delivery Therapeutics, Drug Absorption and Penetration Enhancement Techniques

Research Summary The delivery of medications through the skin has long been a fascinating yet challenging subject of study. For various medications, topical drug administration has offered significant advantages over the systemic route, one of the most important being reduced toxicity due to minimal or no exposure to non-target organs. Because of its simplicity and affordability, topical administration is the preferred method for delivering medicinal substances locally. The topical drug delivery system includes solid powders, semisolids, liquid preparations, and sprays, among other pharmaceutical dosage forms. Gels, creams, and ointments are the most commonly used semisolid preparations for topical medication delivery. These...

The efficiency of humectants as skin moisturizers in the presence of oil

The efficiency of humectants as skin moisturizers in the presence of oil

Background/aims: The research on the treatment of "dry skin syndrome" is hampered by the lack of a suitable animal model. Previously, we developed a validated guinea pig in vivo model in which the dry skin syndrome persists for at least one week. This model allows us to compare the pharmacological effectiveness of known and potential moisturizers for the treatment of dry skin syndrome. Our aim is to study whether the moisturizing efficiency of humectants depends on the solvents in which they are dissolved. Methods: "Dry skin syndrome" was induced on the shaved skin of one side of guinea pigs by daily...
