Novelty Cosmetic Filters Based on Nanomaterials Composed of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles

Novelty Cosmetic Filters Based on Nanomaterials Composed of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles

Research Summary: The following work describes the synthesis of new physical filters based on TiO2/SiO2 and TiO2/Ag nanostructures. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were applied as control material and a popular physical UV filter. The advantage of using materials on the nanometer scale is the elimination of the skin whitening effect that occurs when using photoprotective cosmetics containing titanium dioxide on a macro scale. In addition, the silica coating makes the material less harmful, and the silver coating enriches the material with antibacterial properties.Nanoparticles and nanostructures have been characterized by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX), the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),...

Retinoids in the treatment of skin aging: an overview of clinical efficacy and safety

Retinoids in the treatment of skin aging: an overview of clinical efficacy and safety

Research Summary:Aging of skin is an intricate biological process consisting of two types. While intrinsic or chronological aging is an inevitable process, photoaging involves the premature aging of skin occurring due to cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Chronological and photoaging both have clinically differentiable manifestations. Various natural and synthetic retinoids have been explored for the treatment of aging, and many of them have shown histological and clinical improvement. However, most of the studies have been carried out in patients presenting with photoaged skin. Among the retinoids, tretinoin is possibly the most potent and certainly the most widely investigated retinoid for...

Applications in the Prevention and Treatment of Skin Disorders

Applications in the Prevention and Treatment of Skin Disorders

Research Summary: We are honored to present to the readers the book entitled *Carrier-Mediated Dermal Delivery: Applications in the Prevention and Treatment of Skin Disorders*, which is based on the systematic revision of the most recent findings. This book contains several contributions on new approaches for the management of skin aging and photocarcinogenesis, as well as topical formulations based on nanocarrier systems for skin disorders. These chapters discuss the structure and skin morphology in detail. Cosmeceuticals, laser and photodynamic therapy, and melatonin-based treatments are presented as important strategies for photoaging management. Photodynamic therapy and melatonin can also be used in...

Glycerol and the skin: holistic approach to its origin and functions

Glycerol and the skin: holistic approach to its origin and functions

Research Summary: Glycerol is a trihydroxy alcohol that has been included for many years in topical dermatological preparations. In addition, endogenous glycerol plays a role in skin hydration, cutaneous elasticity, and epidermal barrier repair. The aquaporin-3 transport channel and lipid metabolism in the pilosebaceous unit have been evidenced as potential pathways for endogenous delivery of glycerol and for its metabolism in the skin. Multiple effects of glycerol on the skin have been reported. The diverse actions of the polyol glycerol on the epidermis include improvement of stratum corneum hydration, skin barrier function, and skin mechanical properties. It also inhibits the...
