Health-promoting effects of konjac glucomannan and its practical applications: A critical review

Research Summary

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a dietary fiber and hydrocolloidal polysaccharide isolated from the tubers of *Amorphophallus konjac*. Over the past few decades, purified KGM has been used as a food additive and dietary supplement in many countries. Diets containing konjac flour or KGM are considered healthier, making these foods popular in Asian and European markets. Due to its adhesive properties, KGM can form a protective covering on the surface of the intestine.

KGM also offers a range of health benefits, including reducing glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and blood pressure, while promoting weight loss. Its extensive effects aid in preventing many chronic diseases by regulating metabolism. Recent studies have highlighted KGM’s health benefits, such as its anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, laxative, prebiotic, and anti-inflammatory activities.

Additionally, this review discusses the applications of KGM and its derivatives in fields such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, tissue engineering, and fine chemicals.
