The Scenario of Clays and Clay Minerals Use in Cosmetics/Dermocosmetics

Research Summary

The use of clays in beauty care dates back to ancient times, with therapeutic applications since prehistory, and remains significantly relevant in today's global cosmetic industry. In this review, we describe the various types of clay and clay minerals used in cosmetics and dermocosmetics, including their compositions, uses as active compounds, cosmetic ingredients, and starting materials. We also provide observations about formulation techniques.

From our review, we observed that while a substantial amount of scientific and specialized literature exists on the characterization of clays, only a few studies have included efficacy tests, particularly when clays are incorporated into cosmetic products, with a focus mainly on haircare applications. This review could serve as a resource to encourage further research and development in the coming years, providing scientific and technical information for the cosmetic industry regarding the multifunctional use of clays and clay minerals.
